The 50 best women-owned shops and businesses in Bucharest (2024)

Caru cu Bere is a remarkable Romanian restaurant known for its distinct architectural features. With its wood paneling, stained-glass windows, and charming patio, it stands out as an iconic establishment in Bucharest. This institution has been serving typical Romanian dishes for years, housed in a building with high ceilings and dark wooden stairs that add to its atmospheric ambiance. Caru cu Bere has become synonymous with tradition and quality, attracting locals and visitors alike.

This is place that I have visited more than once and I would say it is worth the hype. The atmosphere is great, the food is great, although on the pricier side, it's compensated by the large portions. I would recommend the ribs, Moldovian stew and their most famous dish the pork knuckle. What I wouldn't recommend is going there for lunch, at night the experience is a lot different in a better way, just make sure you make a reservation if you don't want to wait for a while.

What an atmosphere! Folk dancers were a nice surprise. We had such a great time here and it was recommended by locals. (Although they did tell us it’s owned by non-Romanian people now). The food was delicious and traditional and came out so quickly. The beer list is extensive and they had Romanian non-alcoholic options. Highly recommend!

Great atmosphere and location. There were dancers and music on the night we went there! The interior is amazing!! The coloured glass and hand carved wood! Food is very decent! We ordered more than we could handle as the portions are generous! We tried the pork knuckle (very big portion!), amazing beer soups, chicken and mixed meat stuff cabbage leaves. Great service! Definitely recommend a visit!

Second time here, but my first review... Kind and attentive service, even when busy. You will see (or at least I did) a "service manager" walking around, using an earpiece to ask questions to the servers about whether someone has their food or drink yet, and otherwise proactively ensuring the attentiveness of service. You really get a sense of being taken care of.Might recommend a reservation as it's a popular place. We sat outside and the ambiance was as-expected with terrace seating -- people strolling by, some wild kids, and some people are of course smoking, but nothing out of the ordinary. Generally very pleasant. Of course, there is also seating inside where you can also enjoy and absorb the stunning architecture, almost like a church, though I'm told it's always been a brewery. The food itself was very tasty, also well presented, and the wine selection shines great light on Romanian wines, which I've come to love. There are also international selections, but of course I'd recommend going local! They also serve beer -- local, light, dark, craft, bottle, draft, everything.I didn't use the toilet but I'm told it was clean, so good news there 👍Looking forward to the next visit!

This was our most expensive meal in Romania so far, but we did order more food than we needed. We could of fed 4 adults easy. The food was brilliant we had the veal schnitzel and the large pork knuckle with sauerkraut and mash potatoes. Our drinks were 3 beers, 1 co*cktail, bottle of water & 2 coffees.Service was great and they spoke reasonable English. The building both inside and out is incredible, it is lovely to look at.We would recommend eating here

This place is a must if you are visiting Bucharest. The atmosphere is perfect 🤩 you get to dine in a beautiful place and we were lucky to have great live music as well. Staff was very polite and friendly.. service was fast. They serve big portions of traditional Romanian food. Every dish was delicious. We totally recommend.

We went as it was a "must go" according to a friend of ours, especially since we were touring the city. We went and ordered the pork knuckle, which was good but a bit dry compared to others I had tasted. I really liked the veggies that came with it. We also had the famous papanasi which was super delicious. We were seated downstairs, the vibe is definitely not the same as sitting on the balcony or the other main rooms. The place is packed and definitely requires a reservation. Service could be better.

The interior of this restaurant alone is already worth the visit, looks like a palace. They have live music on both levels, but try to get a table on the ground floor for the views.Definitely make reservations! They are usually fully booked days in advance! There are many options to choose from to eat; everything we tried tasted great. You can eat nicely around 50-80 lei if you choose so, but you can also easily spend a lot more if you want.

Really enjoyed my dining experience here. Delicious local cuisines, surrounded by rustic interiors. Really nice ambience. Staff was friendly and helpful with choosing what you should try from the menu. Definitely recommend to visit this restaurant if you're ever in Bucharest. Keep some space for dessert. It's really good!

A very popular place amongst locals and tourists. Great that it’s huge, so likely you’ll always have a table. However, we booked a table just in case.I would suggest staying inside as the interior is magnificent. It’s very medieval and looks amazing. The food was nice. We tried some localRomanian food. It tasted good and the service was also fast. The waiters were attentive and helpful.

This is a typical tourist location. It was recommended to me by at least five different people as the great place for local cuisine. While the building and the atmosphere have a great vibe with live music and dance performances, the food isn't the best I've had. The local skinless sausages were nice, but the French fries were just awful - not crispy at all. There are better options to eat local food in Bucharest.

Went for a birthday dinner for two.Firstly the building is stunning with a great atmosphere. We were seated inside near the downstairs stairwell which wasn't ideal for a romantic evening out.The staff were fair, one waitress was fantastic and attentive but then another not so much.We ordered the Pheasants Platter and to be honest was disappointed. The whole plate was quite dry with nothing to make it stand out.We also ordered the venison which was amazing! Everything on that plate was a stand out.Overall I'd recommend it based on how beautiful the building is on its own but probably wouldn't go back.

My husband and I were in Bucharest at the end of our Viking cruise, and upon recommendation from a Romanian colleague, we made a reservation to dine at this historical place. This restored building is beautiful: the architecture, the paintings, and the stained glass. There were people walking in just to take pictures. We ordered their most popular dish: the house specialty roasted pork knuckle, for two, and it was humongous and delicious! It was enough to feed three to even four people! We also ordered salad and their “delicious dessert with hot chocolate filling” which turned out to be a lava cake. If you choose to order this dessert, expect to wait for 20 minutes or so.Their website mentions folk dance at 19:30. Somehow, I was picturing a continual dance show for 30 or 45 minutes, but it’s a sporadic dance show. Every few minutes, there’s one dance performance. Try to get a table that’s closest to the bar area in the center of the dining room; otherwise, it will be hard to see the dance with pillars half blocking the view and people clustering the main walkway area to take pictures and videos, blocking the view of those seated behind. It was worth visiting the place and eat there - food was good!

What an amazing place, decor, food and choice of drinks is fantastic. The atmosphere in this place is unforgettable. The Romanian dancers are a joy to watch. If you visit during busy periods expect a delay in getting food /drink but the staff do their very best to get your order to you as quick as possible.

We visited this place a week ago. I read a lot of good reviews on Google, so we decided to check if this was true. When we arrived at this restaurant, almost all the tables were occupied. But we found one table. The place is really very popular and a lot of people come. The restaurant is large with indoor and outdoor seating. We ordered turkey schnitzel, sausages with cheese and mici with potatoes. We didn't wait long. The food was delicious, especially the sausages with cheese - top! Pricing policy is average, slightly above average. Beautiful restaurant design inside. Overall everything was great, we liked it!But there was one moment that confused us. When we asked for the bill, they brought us a bill from another table (with a higher cost). We paid and the waiter didn't even notice. When we saw this, we asked to review our bill.

Very cool place. Make sure to get a reservation! Inside is beautifully decorated but gets loud because of the high ceiling and echo. We had a table in the corner, it was fantastic!Food is good. Nothing was absolutely amazing. Flavor is there but everything on the plate just tasted the same.Staff was very kind and standard for European dining.

At first glance I thought this would be an expensive tourist trap. But I got recommended the lunch deal. 35 lei for soup, salad and a main dish. And vegetarian options available too! The staff was very friendly and I enjoyed my food. The violin players indoors made the place look magical.

Sabine de Voigt — Google review

We were there for breakfast. We sat outside and I was really surprised that the waiter didn't talk English. City tours are going by and tell that it's the most old place and attracting tourists, but the waiter doesn't speak English. So it was hard to explain him what we wanted. Breakfast was too salty. We additionally ordered Pavlova desert and it was dry and brittle, felt like old.

Authentic vintage interior and live music create a great atmosphere. Incredibly delicious beans in bread, and the rest of the food was also very tasty. Service - perfect. They have a great organization and are not slow at all in serving the food. For dinner without a reservation you cannot sit as it is always full. The best restaurant in Romania.

One of the oldest beer houses in Bucharest. It's absolutely enormous with tons of indoor & outdoor seating. Great beer selection and I recommend asking what the house specials are. The decoration is absurdly good, really full of characterFood is pretty good, with reasonable portions and prices. The sausage & mustard was excellent as was the vegetarian platter.Service is a bit hectic with too few waiters per block of tables.

Nothing but good things to say about this place. Excellent traditional romanian food, friendly servers. We had a live show during our dinner which was lovely. It's also a historic building. We reserved the balcony and it was the best choice hands down as we were able to see the show very well.

I think I've been here before, but must have sit only outside since I don't remember the interior. It's gorgeous.Definitely worth a visit.Food was very good. Eggplant salad is not as tasty as the one made home (note applies only to Romanians), but still pretty decent.French fries are not crispy (since I've seen this in a review), but that's quite traditional. They were very good.Service was good (4/5).

I have never eaten such good food, each dish seems like a house specialty, and the prices are more than fair for what you eat. The staff is particularly friendly and welcoming, they also accepted our request to stay on the upper floor. The environment is traditional, something you don't find around, I will definitely go back to try other dishes!

A very nice restaurant in the city center with traditional Romanian food. The food wasn't the best, but the atmosphere is worth visiting. The interior is very beautiful. The staff was very friendly. There is an English translation of every dish on the menu. There was live music with piano and violin. We enjoyed our lunch there. Recommended.

Had a great dinner out tonight, my server Alexandru Gabriel was great. I very nearly ordered too much food and he was super helpful!Food was fantastic, all local dishes, and the atmosphere was splendid.I didn't have a reservation, but waited for a table at the bar for about 20minutes. i arrived at 7, and the restaurant was very busy by 8pm. Highly recommend reserving in advance, or arriving early.Loved that there was also some local dancing throughout my time at the restaurant. Would definitely return to try some other dishes.

We had a lunch here, and had a good time. The food was amazing, with generously large portions. Everything tasted amazing. They have a good selection of salads, meat dishes, hot drinks and wine. The desert selection is also really good. The service was fine. The waiters knew whether certain dishes had allergens, they could recommend something, and they were nice, however, they did not remove dirty plates when bringing new food, they did not bring enough plates sometimes etc.Although the atmosphere when we came in was that of a generic restaurant, later in the evenings they sometimes have live music and dances. The interior also greatly reflects the traditional Romanian style.

Had an amazing time here on my sister birthday. Pork knuckle was a massive portion and i would say it’s definitely for more than 2 person. Very fulfilling meal and I loved their dessert.

What a gem in Bucharest! We were very impressed with this restaurant which concluded our visit to Romania in a very pleasant way.The building itself was very gourmet, with a very fancy & impressive interior design. It was packed when we went (I recommend for you to reserve a table in advance). The food was incredible. Very generous portions, using products of great quality, and memorable taste. The dessert was lovely as well. The price was fair for the experience we got with both the amazing building & its interior, as well as the amazing dishes.Amazing showcase of the Romanian cuisine. Highly recommend it.

Amazing food! The servers are extremely nice and the vibes are high! They have live shows everyday around 1.30 pm! Totally recommend as it is also listed as one of the legendary restaurants around the world!I will leave the music program in the photos! The food was incredible as well, worth going back again :)

Historic, traditional restaurant in Bucharest. Gets pretty busy and you may need to wait for a table, but you’re allowed to wait inside at the bar. The bar has a great beer selection. Food is traditional and hearty. The menu is pretty extensive and dishes were tasty. There is live music sometimes which adds to the atmosphere. Probably a little pricey, but a good experience

James Smith — Google review

A fantastic restaurant in the heart of old town Bucharest. A great place to go for traditional Romanian food at a really reasonable price for the quality you get. The food is delicious and the staff are all really friendly and helpful. If you want traditional food this is the place to go. It can be very busy so it would be best to make a reservation if possible, although they do have some space for walk ins.
