1.

Introduction

CES EduPack is an application that allows students and professionals to answer questionsabout materials: about their properties (such as strength, density, fatigue resistance, maximum temperature, electrical conductivity, etc), their cost, their usage, their processing, their environmental footprint, and much more. If you design and build things, you will makethem out of materials. But out of which materials? CES EduPack is an invaluable tool to helpyou explore and choose materials for all your applications in an intelligent way.

CES EduPack is a fully synchronized companion to the textbook Materials: engineering, science, processing and design 1 by Michael Ashby, Hugh Shercliff and David Cebon. Note thatCES EduPack and this book can be used independently.

2.

Starting up

Here it is assumed that Citrix Receiver or CES EduPack itself has already been installed on thecomputer that you are working on. To check this out for Citrix Receiver, consult Sec. 6.Installation notes for CES EduPack can be found in Sec. 6B.

There are three ways to start CES EduPack:

  • If CES EduPack is installed, click its icon.
  • If not, use the Citrix Receiver by pressing its icon . This is the simplest way. You will get a screen showing all available applications from the Weblogin server. CES EduPack should be there. Click its icon, and the Citrix Viewer starts up, running CES EduPack. If the CES EduPack icon is not there, press the plus sign (+) on the left side of the Citrix Receiver screen and get CES EduPack from the Database collection.

1 2 nd edition, 2010, Butterworth-‐Heinemann, ISBN 978-‐1-‐ 85617-‐895-‐2

  • A third way is to start your web browser and login to weblogin.tudelft. The Applications screen with the Main window will open up. Click on the Database icon, and then on the CES EduPack icon.

The Databases screen opens:

Press the Level 1 icon to select the simplest database. In some cases you should select otherdatabases with more detailed and extended content. If your answer is not in the Level database, try the Level 2 database. Note that the Databases screen extends further to the right. After selection of the database, the standard CES EduPack screen opens. Here we show theupper left corner, from which all the actions can be started.

You are now ready to work with CES EduPack. After usage: Quit CES EduPack. Disconnect or log off from Citrix Viewer and/or CitrixReceiver.

Note: Instead of selecting a database from the Database screen, you can also select getting started(upper right corner). This will bring you into a video tutorial environment. Not for use in class, unlessyou use headphones. The video tutorial environment can also be accessed through the Help button onthe CES EduPack toolbar.

-‐-‐(4)-‐-‐ Which of the three Flexible Polymer Foams (Verly Low Density, Low Density, MediumDensity) is used in artificial skin applications? How much denser is a typical Medium Densityfoam than a Very Low Density foam?

TIP: If a range of values is specified for a property of a certain material, and nomore specific information is known, use the midpoint of the range in answersans for further calculations.

-‐-‐(5)-‐-‐ List at least three applications that, in your judgement (don’t use EduPack yet!) , needoptical quality glass. What can EduPack tell you?

-‐-‐(6)-‐-‐ Make a graph in which Tensile strength is plotted against density ρ for all materials. This means: Tensile strength on the vertical axis and density on the horizontal axis. Firstcheck what Tensile strength is.Questions about this graph:-‐-‐-‐-‐ Identify polypropylene (PP), silicon carbide (SiC) and magnesium alloys.-‐-‐-‐-‐ Use the Family Envelopes button to see metals, ceramics, etc., grouped.-‐-‐-‐-‐ Is there an approximate relation between Tensile strength and density that applies toalmost all materials? Is this relation linear? Quadratic? Identify materials that are far outsidethis approximate relation.

GRAPH TIPS

  • To make graphs, start with Select. Make sure that the Select from box contains Edu Level 1. Then press the Graph icon for every new graph you want.
  • The properties plotted on the Y-Axis and the X-Axis should each be selected in the Attribute box.
  • To identify a known material in the plot and have its ellipse flash, doubleclick the name of the material in the Results list (then, delete (x) the window you get, otherwise you won’t see the flashing ellipse).
  • To stop the flashing of ellipses, single click in an empty part of the graph.
  • To see which material belongs to an ellipse, single click the ellipse and a label will appear. Drag the label to another position if desired.
  • To remove a label, select it (single click) and press the Delete key.
  • Check out what the buttons above the graph do by moving the pointer over them and wait for the meaning to appear.
  • For grouping materials in a graph (on the X-axis), use the Advanced... button for Category, then go to the Trees page, on which you select Ceramics and glasses, followed by pressing the Insert button; Hybrids, followed by Insert; etc.

-‐-‐(7)-‐-‐ Make a graph in which materals are grouped along the horizontal X-‐axis (metals, polymers, ceramics, hybrids) and price is plotted along the vertical Y-‐ axis.

-‐-‐(8)-‐-‐ A certain bike is said to be an aluminum bike. What does this mean? Compareproperties and costs of the pure element aluminum and of aluminum alloys.

4.

More Exercises

-‐-‐(9)-‐-‐ The Young’s Modulus E and density ρ of a material say something about thepropagation of mechanical waves in the material. To be precise, the speed of longitudinalwaves (sound) in a material is equal to (E/ρ)1/2. Which materials have the about the samesound velocity as low-‐alloy steel? Is there a polymer among them? Plot a contour of E/ρ ( i., aslope=1 line) onto an E–ρ chart, to identify the materials very close to or on the correct line.

Tip: The slope=1 line will make it difficult to click on the appropriate ellipses (so that you can seethe names of these materials), because it runs through those very same ellipses and you willprobably click the line instead of the ellipses. Move the line down to make this easier and move itback up again to keep track of which are the correct ellipses.

-‐-‐(10)-‐-‐ Find the polymers with a maximum service temperature (Tmax) above 200°C.Which one is the most expensive, which ones are recyclable?

-‐-‐(11)-‐-‐ Explore the potential of PP-‐SiC (polypropylene – silicon carbide) fiber composites inthe following way. Make a modulus–density ( E–ρ ) chart and change the logarithmic axisranges so that they span the range 1 < E < 1000 GPa and 500 < ρ < 5000 kg/m 3 . Find and labelPP and SiC. Note that PP is called the matrix (m) and SiC the reinforcement (r). The volumefraction of the reinforcement fibers is denoted by f.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The density ρ of the composite is given by

ρ=fρr+(1−f)ρm. (1)

The modulus Eof the composite depends on thedirection of the reinforcement fibers with respectto the loading direction. If they are parallel, thefibers and the matrix strain by the same amount(like springs in parallel), and E will have the largest value possible EU (U for Upperbound),

EU=fEr+(1−f)Em. (2)

6. Note that CES EduPack is a Windows-‐only app (situation Fall 2013), so on a Mac you willneed to have a virtual Windows machine installed.

6. Installation of Citrix Receiver on your own computerLog in to weblogin.tudelft. There are two possibilities:(1) if you see a CITRIX page with a black button Download, this means that installation ofCitrix Receiver needs to be done. Press the Download button. On the next screen, select CitrixReceiver either directly from the Most Downloaded column or from the Select Product list inthe Find Downloads box. Next, download the Receiver and follow installation instructions fromyour own computer.

After install, it is possible that the Citrix Viewer starts up automatically and creates a TU Delft WindowsDesktop. You now have a virtual Windows computer that runs from a server. This is not needed for CESEduPack, so the Desktop can be disconnected.

Move the Citrix Receiver icon to an easy-‐to-‐reach place (e. on a Mac: to the Dock)

(2) If after logging in to weblogin.tudelft, you see the Weblogin page showing theApplications screen with the Main window, this means that Citrix Receiver has been installedon your system. You are ready to use CES EduPack (in fact, you are ready to run all Webloginapplications).

6. Installation of CES EduPack on your own computerThe CES EduPack executable can be downloaded from the campus software site on your owncomputer. Windows only! The licence is valid from August to August. Each year a new versionof CES EduPack should be downloaded. In BlackBoard: MyStudentInfo → Student Resouces → TUDelft Software (TDS), Go to softwareIn BlackBoard: My Staff Info → Staff Resouces → TUDelft Software (TDS), Go to softwareCheck I agree with the requirementsClick Go to softwareClick Software in the left marginTo download, click CES EduPack Staff (does this work for students?)
