For the avocado sauce

Avocado- use ripe avocados for the best creamy and delicious flavor and texture.

Lime- go for a zesty touch by using fresh lime juice to give it that extra pop of flavor.

Cilantro- wash your cilantro throughout and use the leaves and not the stems for a delish flavor and texture.

Faq's

What goes with chicken tacos?

Chicken tacos are versatile and pair well with a variety of toppings such as salsa, guacamole, sour cream, lettuce, cheese, and lime wedges.

Can I double this recipe?

Yes! You can double or triple this recipe. There is an option to automatically double, half, or triple this recipe in the recipe card below!

What do you put in tacos?

Tacos typically consist of a filling, such as seasoned meat (beef, chicken, pork), vegetables (lettuce, tomatoes, onions), cheese, salsa, and toppings like sour cream and guacamole.

Do you shred chicken breast before or after cooking?

Shredding chicken breast is typically done after cooking, as it allows the meat to retain its juices and flavors. This process is easier and more effective when the chicken is cooked and tender.

Storing

To store chicken tacos properly, ensure they are completely cooled before transferring them to an airtight container. Refrigerate the chicken tacos promptly and consume them within 3-4 days for optimal freshness.

Reheating

To reheat baked chicken tacos, preheat your oven to 350°F, wrap the tacos in aluminum foil to prevent them from drying out, and bake for about 10-15 minutes until heated through.

Then, remove the foil and crisp up the shell for a few minutes until its crispy.

Make It Ahead Of Time

Season the chicken breasts with taco seasoning, then bake in the preheated oven according to the instructions. Once cooked, shred the chicken using two forks.

Store the shredded chicken in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to use. When ready to assemble tacos, reheat the chicken and prepare your favorite taco toppings for a quick and delicious meal!

Substitutions

Corn tortillas- I used soft flour tortillas for this recipe, but corn tortillas will work great! If you like hard shells will work awesome too.

Gluten free- make these tacos gluten free by using gluten free tortillas of your choice. Use soft tortillas for the best baked tacos.

Tofu- Tofu is an excellent plant-based protein that can be seasoned and cooked to mimic the texture of chicken in your tacos.

Air fryer instructions

Start by seasoning your shredded chicken with the taco seasoning. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Fill each taco shell with the seasoned shredded chicken and cheese.

Place the filled tacos in the air fryer basket without crowding them. Cook for about 5-7 minutes or until the shells are crispy and the filling is heated through.

Variations

Guacamole- instead of making an avocado sauce, you can use your favorite guacamole recipe, and top your tacos with lots of guac.

Spice- feel free to add jalapeño to your tacos if you like a nice kick to your tacos. Another way to add spice for this is adding an additional ½ teaspoon or more of cayenne pepper to the chicken taco seasoning.

Ground chicken- this recipe is made with baked chicken that is being shredded, but you can use ground chicken instead. Mix it with the spices, and cook it on the stovetop until it's done!

BBQ Chicken Tacos- Add a smoky flavor to your tacos by using BBQ sauce-marinated baked chicken as the filling, topped with coleslaw and pickled onions.

Grill for Charred Goodness- Grilling the chicken imparts a smoky flavor and adds a delicious charred crust to your tacos.

Slice Thinly- thinly slice the chicken with a sharp knife instead of shredding it to make the process quicker.

Buffalo Chicken Baked Tacos- Toss shredded chicken in buffalo sauce before filling the taco shells, then drizzle ranch dressing on top before baking for a spicy kick.

Fresh Toppings- Load up on fresh toppings like diced tomatoes, avocado slices, shredded lettuce, and chopped cilantro for added freshness and texture.

Pickled Vegetables- Pickled jalapeños, onions, or radishes can add a tangy crunch that complements the tender chicken in tacos.

Sauces- Drizzle with your favorite sauce - whether it's tangy salsa, creamy guacamole, or spicy hot sauce - to elevate the flavors in your taco.

Pineapple Salsa- Top your baked chicken tacos with homemade pineapple salsa made of diced pineapple, red onion, jalapeno, cilantro, and lime juice for a sweet and tangy flavor.

Cilantro Lime Rice- serve these tacos with fluffy white rice cooked with fresh cilantro and zesty lime juice for a refreshing and aromatic side dish.
